The famous Hollywood sign was created in 1923 to promote a real estate development project: the sign was "Hollywoodland".
The promotional initiative was to last a year and a half, but with the rise of the Hollywood film industry it began to become the symbol of the city and therefore it was decided not to dismantle it.
With the passing of the years the sign began to deteriorate and in 1949 it was decided to renew the structure. With this operation, the suffix "Land" was removed. The sign came back to be appreciated, but since the structure was made of wood and metal foil, it was damaged in a short time to appear in poor condition in the 70’s.
In 1979 it was decided to build a new structure more resistant to environmental stress. Each letter was financed by a donation of $27,777. offered by various benefactors. Including Hugh Hefner (founder of Playboy) and Warner Brothers Records. This sign is what can still be observed today.
On the night between December 31, 2016 and January 1, 2017, the letters "O" of the famous sign were made up as two "E" by unknown vandals. Forming the word "weed" which in slang means marijuana.
In 2023 it will be 100 years that on Mount Lee and the sign of Hollywood.
