Jack was a cheap, drunken blacksmith one night while he was bivouacking in an inn. He was introduced to the devil, claiming his soul.
Jack astutely asked as his last wish money for a mug of beer.
The devil agreed and turned into a coin.
Immediately Jack put it in a pocket in which he kept a silver cross, thus preventing the devil from returning to his original form.
At that point the devil proposed to Jack to let him live on earth another year in exchange for his freedom.
Jack took the deal and released him.
The next year the devil came back to Jack to take him to hell with him.
Jack asked him to help him collect an apple from a tree before following him to hell.
The devil soon climbed up the tree to get the apple.
Immediately Jack took the knife and engraved a cross on the trunk of the tree.
So the devil, unable to go down through that carved trunk, was forced to ask Jack for help to get down.
🤝Jack agrees to help the Devil as Long as his soul never entered Hell, the Devil agreed.
🪦 When Jack died, his soul went knocking on heaven but it was not opened to him because he had lived a sinful life. So he went to hell. Where even the devil denied him entry by reminding him of their pact.
🎃 Merciful for the lot of Jack the devil gave him a burning ember of hell to enlighten him to the eternal wandering to which he had condemned himself.
Jack’s soul put the ember in a pumpkin and from that day on I started to travel around the world looking in vain for a place to stay.
