The Ghosts of Lokrum Island - Lokrum Island

Lokrum is an island of Croatia 600 meters from the town of Dubrovnik. The island is uninhabited and is home to a nature park. In particular, the ban, still in force today, to remain on the island after sunset.

The island of Lokrum was donated by the citizens of Dubrovnik to the Benedictine Order to build a monastery for religious services and letters to the children of the poor of the city. The monastery was completed in 1023.

According to a legend in 1192 Richard I of England (Lionheart) found salvation on the island after a shipwreck on the way back from the Crusades and in gratitude he lavishly rewarded the monks. They remained on the island until 1806 when the Napoleonic troops occupied the island and dissolved the order by driving out the monks.

It is said that before leaving the island the monks cast a curse by sprinkling the island’s borders with wax so that no soul of those who have died there is believed to be haunted on the island. Impressive is how after the abandonment of the Napoleonic troops. All the owners of the island have made a tragic end: Maximilian of Habsburg. Rudolf of habsburg, Elizabeth of Bavaria.
