The footprint of the Devil - München

The Frauenkirche, also known as Our Lady’s Cathedral, is one of the largest churches in Germany.

The first stone for the construction of the church was laid in 1468 and it took just 20 years to complete it, a record for those times.

Legend has it that the builders of the Frauenkirche were afraid that they could not complete the building, so they asked for the help of the devil.

He made a deal.

According to the pact, the devil would have committed himself not to let unforeseen events happen and

accidents during the works allowing to finish the church in very fast times, in exchange for completed works would have to enter a church without windows.

The devil, in fact, thought that a church without windows would be unusable.

The builders agreed to the deal anyway.

So the works ended, without problems, in just 20 years.

Before the consecration, the devil wanted to make sure that the church really had been built without windows.

He went into the cathedral and actually saw that there was not so much joy with a big laugh.

The pact had been fulfilled: the devil had entered a church without windows.

But taking another step forward, the devil realized that he had been deceived. The majestic columns on the sides of the central nave hid the windows, giving the illusion from the center of the entrance that there were none.

Raging Lucifer slammed his foot on the floor, thus leaving, at that point, the imprint of his boot, as an indelible sign of his wrath.

Still today entering the church you can see the famous imprint.

It is said that putting your foot in the groove left by the devil on the floor brings good luck.
