The 500€ note is worth 550€ because of its not easy availability since it is no longer issued since 2019 even if it continues to be legal tender.
Particular is its weight and its size. In fact it is only 0.12mm thick and weighs only 0.6gr. One million euro in 500€ notes weighs only 1.2kg and occupies more or less the capacity of a women’s bag. The same amount in dollars weighs 6kg and occupies inside a suitcase and a half.
This makes the 500€ note more transportable and concealable, so it is the preferred cut by Narcos who even apply the 20% discount for those who pay with 500€ denominations.
It is also surprising that one third of all the banknotes of the entire European community are in Spain, especially in Madrid, the main port of call for drug traffickers from South America.
