Spring Equinox - Stonehenge

Stonehenge literally suspended stone is one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world located in the Salisbury plain in England.

This megalithic monument dates back about 5000 years and consists of a series of large stones erected in a circle.

Stonehenge stones are of different sizes and materials, some weigh more than 40 tons and are believed to have been transported miles from nearby stone quarries using advanced techniques for the time.

The precise use of Stonehenge remains unknown but it is thought that it may have been used as a place of worship and astronomical calendar.

March 21 is a day of great importance in Stonehenge and around the world since it coincides with the spring equinox in the northern hemisphere and day and night have an equal duration.

This is a very significant event for many ancient cultures.

During the spring equinox at Stonehenge the sun rises exactly above the stones of the "pit" at the eastern end of the site just above the altar stone and filtering through the stones projects on the central altar creating a very striking effect.

This alignment of the sun with the Stonehenge stones at the spring equinox has long been studied by archaeologists and astronomers and is one of the reasons why this prehistoric site is so fascinating to many visitors.
