One day Francesco went to Gubbio.
He entered the city and saw that there were no animals or people. All the citizens of Gubbio were locked in their homes for fear of a huge and fierce wolf.
Everyone knew Francesco and asked him for help. Francis accepted and went to talk to the wolf. As soon as he saw the animal, he called him: "Brother wolf, in the name of God, do not harm me and all men".
Then he approached him and said: Brother wolf, why have you harmed your brother men? Everyone hates you. Everyone is afraid of you. You must stop, there must be peace between you and men, so you will all be at peace in this city.
The wolf understood and shook his head. Then Francis said to the inhabitants of Gubbio: "The wolf wants to live in peace with you, he truly desires it. It is important that you promise me that you will feed your new brother.”
From that day on, thanks to Francis and the good will of both the wolf and the citizens of Gubbio, peace had returned. The wolf came to visit the inhabitants who fed him and became friends with everyone. When he died, the villagers wept because they had lost their dear friend, brother wolf.
