Kaamos: The Polar Night - Utsjoki

In addition to the aurora borealis and heavy snowfalls, in Lapland and Northern Norway you can admire another spectacular natural phenomenon: the Kaamos which in Finnish means polar night.

In the period between December and January, above the Arctic Circle, the sun never rises, remaining always below the horizon, the light of the day leaks only in the central hours of the day when there is a faint dawn and sunset.

The dim light reflects on the white, snowy and icy landscape reflecting muffled, almost pastel colours that cover the sky and the earth, creating a unique spectacle.

The shades vary from light gray to bluish purple giving the Kaamos a fairytale atmosphere. This phenomenon lasts almost two months in Utsjoki, on the border between Finland and Norway.
