Krampus - Bressanone

It is said that in the past, during the harsh winter of famine, in the villages of the dolomites, boys used to dress up in goat skins, horns and animal carcasses to scare and rob the inhabitants of the nearby villages of food.

One year a devil taking advantage of his demon form infiltrated a group of boys and began to do every evil. So to unmask him and drive him back to hell he was called Bishop Nicholas, who over the years has become Santa Claus.

When he came to the place, Saint Nicholas recognized the devil by the footprints his hooves left on the snow. He exorcised him and imprisoned him, making him his slave, entrusted him with the task of punishing evil children.

Since that day to commemorate the saint’s victory over the devil every year on 5 December, eve of Saint Nicholas, in many italian and austrian cities of the alps events are held in which the Krampus parade, in fact, men dressed as demons are the largest of Bressanone and Brunico.
