Aalborg, a town in the south of Denmark, has a very special tradition that has spread throughout the country over the centuries.
The tradition in question is that unmarried children on their 25th birthday are covered entirely with cinnamon by friends and relatives.
Inevitably, the guy who undergoes this ritual smells like cinnamon for weeks. According to some sources, the tradition was born precisely because it was hoped that the scent of cinnamon could attract girls by giving the birthday boy some extra chance to impress.
Always the same custom provides that, if the unmarried state lasts until 30 years, on the day of 30 birthday the birthday boy is covered with pepper as punishment for not having yet found a girl.
In recent years, girls have also undergone this ritual.
