Anubis was the God of mummification, of cemeteries, and guardian of the world of the dead.
He was nicknamed Lord of the Westerners, since it was believed that the world of the dead was on the west bank of the Nile.
The God was depicted with the body of man and the head of jackal, his main task was the weighing of the heart, a process in which it was established if a soul was worthy to enter the underworld.
It all happened in the courthouse of Osiris.
The weighing was attended by 42 judges and the Toth God took note of the outcome. On one of the two scales was the heart of the deceased, on the other plate was a feather of the Goddess of Justice Maath.
If the heart did not exceed the weight of the feather it meant that the deceased had been upright in life and therefore deserved access to the kingdom of the afterlife, otherwise his soul would have disappeared forever.
